Dan Smith and Jay Schulman have been taking artistic portraits for more than 15 years, and élan’s been delivering clients since 2001.
“Jay and I have been taking portraits at our Hill Signature Portrait Studio in Great Falls since 1993, and we’ve seen the portraiture business change dramatically with the advent of digital photography, which brings out the creative artistry in both of us.
“The other change we’ve seen has been the growth of our business, both in our Great Falls studio and at our outdoor summer location in Corolla, North Carolina, where we’ve been taking family portraits on the sand dunes for the past six years.
“We attribute our business’s growth to Jay and I assuming a more aggressive advertising posture. We wanted to get our message out that we’re nice guys and our goal is to produce something that our clients will cherish for a long time.
“We needed an advertising venue to deliver our message, while at the same time positioning Hill Signature Portrait Studio to the upscale audience that is the core of our business.
“We chose élan in 2001 because the magazine had taken hold in Northern Virginia. Plus, it’s an arts magazine, and we believe its readers are more interested in the visual arts, like portraits.
“Over the past six years we have run an ad in almost every issue of élan since the first one in ’01, and our business continues to grow. We ask our clients how they learned about us, and élan always heads the list.”
